A poem by Mary Mitchell

My life has a veneer,
Quite a glossy , happy one,
Mostly shiny and eager to experience
Fun and friendship and love.
This veneer scrubs up well
And can look reasonably attractive
In the right light.
Looking closely though, some of the edges are split,
Or crumbled in places.
Hair lined cracks sometimes give it a marbled appearance.
From time to time, a sliver falls away,
To reveal……..a vast ocean of tears.

This was written just over a year ago now – before everything went pear shaped. The thing is, these feelings have been there from the beginning and don’t change. We all know how to put on a brave face, cheerful exterior etc etc. so many people are doing that right now, but sadly , many more are too exhausted with caring to be able to do that.
