Dementia Friendly Hospital Charter just as relevant today during the pandemic

An update from Frank Arrojo, Carer representative, NDAA Dementia Friendly Hospital Taskforce As we know hospitals had to make some dramatic changes to their working practices in order to deal with the pandemic, which did initially result in some changes both for patients and family carers. However, over the past several weeks members of the Dementia Friendly Hospital Taskforce have been working on updating the Hospital Charter, to support acute hospitals in England and provide advice and best practice examples in dealing with the pandemic. On 6 October a revised edition of the Hospital Charter was released by the National Dementia Action Alliance, and you can download a copy by clicking here. The Hospital Charter provides a minimum set of standards that focus on the needs of people with dementia and their unpaid family and other carers, who support them, which sets out what they can expect when they are admitted to an acute hospital in England. Therefore, the revised Hospital Charter highlights why it is just as important and relevant today - during the pandemic - as it was before. For example, under "Partnerships" (on page 8) it states the "... hospital continues to actively support the right of carers/families to support the person with dementia who is admitted to hospital ...", and under "Assessments" (on page 9) it states "... assessments should be carried out in the presence of the carer ... to maximise communication ...". Also, the revised Hospital Charter makes the "What to expect from us during a stay in hospital" Poster - which was released last year - just as relevant today during the pandemic. Also, if you have set up an Emergency Plan for the person you support why not consider including a copy of the Poster in your plan, as a reminder just in case a stay in hospital is required.
