Recognition for Welsh unpaid carers with celebratory networking event

Our mission is to connect and empower carers of people with dementia. We have teamed up with Ynys Môn MP, Virginia Crosbie, to host a networking event for unpaid carers living in North Wales.

Caring for loved one with dementia can be an incredibly isolating experience. We want to ensure nobody faces dementia alone. If you or anyone you know provides support for someone with dementia or another illness, we welcome you to our free and friendly networking event on November 18th at The Dinorben Arms, Amlwch. This event is a chance to meet up with other like-minded carers and learn more about organisations who provide support in your local area.

The tide involvement network connects carers from across the UK providing them with valuable peer support. Our campaigning and influencing work offers carers with the opportunity to have their say in policies and practices that affect them. We consider carers to be experts through their lived experience. We believe that together we can create a better future for everyone affected by dementia.

There are 700,000 people in the UK alone who care for someone with dementia. In Ynys Mon alone, there are an estimated 1386 people living with dementia and 1039 people who care for someone with dementia. Our concern is that many of these people don’t know about the information and support that is available to them.

Unpaid carers contribute £13.9 billion per year to the UK economy in the care they provide for their loved ones. Over 600 people a day have to give up work to be able to commit to their caring responsibilities. Sadly, their efforts often go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Dementia can be a life-altering diagnosis. With no clinical pathway, it has left many who receive one feeling completely overwhelmed and lost. We understand that alongside caring responsibilities, trying to navigate the health and social care system can feel like a maze.

Sam Bolam, Chief Officer of tide, says “One word we hear more than any other from unpaid carers it is loneliness. Upon receiving a dementia diagnosis, it can be difficult to know where to turn. We want carers of people with dementia to know we are here to help and no one has to face a dementia journey alone.”

Virginia Crosbie, Conservative MP for Ynys Môn, says “Many people who care for loved ones don’t realise they are carers and, therefore, often don’t access the support and services available to them. It is vital that those affected by the disease receive the recognition and support they deserve. Our “Together for Carers” event is a chance for unpaid carers living in the Ynys Mon constituency to share their experiences with other people who understand what they are going through and get to know more about local organisations who can offer information, advice and support.”
