Understanding Living Grief and Bereavement
Feelings and behaviours of grief and bereavement are very much permitted and accepted in society when there is loss of life. The common assumption is that they only occur when there has been a death. When caring for someone with Dementia you can experience feelings of grief and bereavement when the person is still living. When someone is still living you are told “Be Strong” or “At Least” and encouraged to suppress these feelings as an action of bravery, strength or staying positive. There is little awareness, acknowledgment or understanding about feelings of grief and bereavement when a person is still living – but when you care for someone with dementia, loss does not just mean loss of life…
What we are going to talk about:
- Trigger points and different circumstances where you may feel feelings of grief and bereavement
- Unspoken thoughts and feelings
- Advice from other carers who have experienced this
