tide are hosting an upcoming ‘Welcome to tide’ event for members of its network and those interested in becoming members of the network. The session will give carers an opportunity to get together with people in a similar situation, participate in stimulating discussion and learn from one another’s experiences. You will also learn about tide, what you can expect from us and the various ways you could become involved with tide.

In November we attended UK Dementia Congress, where four of our fantastic carer members took to the main stage to share their stories. These carers called on attendees, and wider society, to recognise them as more than statistics, to see them as people with rights. Today on Carers Rights Day, we are sharing the story of this campaign, and some of the promises that came in through #CarersVow. Life Story Network CiC has been awarded a major grant from the Big Lottery Fund to support carers, and former carers, of people living with dementia across the UK, through their pioneering programme ‘tide – together in dementia everyday’. The organisation has been awarded a £1.2million grant from the Big Lottery Fund, which uses money raised by National Lottery players to help communities achieve their ambitions.

Our 'Presenting to Influence' course, part of our Carers Development Programme, will give you the skills and confidence to tell your story about your caring experience with impact, so that others can learn from it and make positive changes. This course will be run in conjunction with Sight and Mind CiC and work with carers based in Knowsley.

The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales is an independent voice and champion for older people across Wales, standing up and speaking out on their behalf. She works to ensure that those who are vulnerable and at risk are kept safe and ensures that all older people have a voice that is heard, that they have choice and control, that they don’t feel isolated or discriminated against and that they receive the support and services they need. The Commissioner's work is driven by what older people say matters most to them and their voices are at the heart of all that she does.

The University of Worcester has been awarded a major grant from the National Lottery to support people and families living with dementia across the UK. The University’s Association for Dementia Studies has been awarded a £587,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK towards its Meeting Centres Support Programme. Over the next three years, the funding will support communities across the UK to establish Meeting Centres for people and families affected by dementia.

Dementia Carers Count supports family, friends and partners looking after someone with dementia. Their courses have been attended by husbands, wives, partners, daughters, sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren from 18-80 years from across the UK. All of the courses are delivered by qualified professionals such as occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and speech and language therapists. If you’d like to better understand your friend or family member, discuss the challenges you’re facing and learn about your own wellbeing, they could have just what you need.

'tide –together in dementia everyday' is committed to working in equal partnership with carers of people with dementia who share our values and commitment. We are now looking to recruit carers of people with dementia to join our UK wide tide Advisory Group. As a member of the Advisory Group you will be fundamental in determining how tide can achieve its mission and aims. The Advisory Group will inform and add credibility to the work of tide across the UK. Advisory Group members will work with the tide staff team in each country and lead activities in their areas.

Last week the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) published The Dementia Care Pathway, guidance which outlines the dementia care pathway and associated benchmarks to support improvements in the delivery and quality of care and support, for people living with dementia and their families and carers.

In legal terms, dementia is recognised as a disability and in recent years, this recognition has been an important factor in our tide campaign for positive change. Acknowledging that dementia is a disability helps to identify the misconceptions and barriers that exist in society, which often prevents people living independently for as long as possible and shines a light on the immense pressure placed on family carers, often ignored and undervalued by policy makers, commissioners and society as a whole.

There are currently 850, 000 people living with dementia in the UK of whom approximately 25,000 are estimated to be from a minority ethnic background. The number of people from minority ethnic communities living with dementia is set to increase to 50,000 by 2051 and 172,000 2051. This is a seven-fold increase in 40 years compared to the two-fold increase in the majority population. Race Equality Foundation (Bradford University) have published a briefing paper on 'Dementia and Minority Ethnic Carers'. Here our very own Shahid Mohammed, responds to this paper:

Health and Social Care Partners have committed to working together over the next five years to make Greater Manchester the best place to live with dementia. Co-ordinated regional support through a partnership delivery model – Dementia United (DU) will ensure that learning between localities is optimised and variation in service provision and access is better understood through peer review and knowledge exchange and minimised.

The Work and Pensions Committee has called on the Government to remove the benefit calculation that sees Carer’s Allowance, £64.60 per week, withdrawn in full as soon as carers earn more than £120 a week. This rule means that working additional hours can leave carers worse off, as many carers rely on the financial support of Carer’s Allowance. There are about 670,000 carers of people living with dementia in the UK, who save the state £11bn a year and yet they face financial struggles and work that isn't flexible or considerate to the needs of caring.
