The UK-wide charity tide (together in dementia everyday), brings together carers of people living with dementia to share their stories – as experts by experience – to influence positive change. We are recruiting! We have four exciting jobs on offer for people who want to join a dynamic, collaborative and supportive team. We recently revised our structure to provide the right focus on delivering our National Lottery funded programme and building a sustainable future for both Life Story Network and tide. All posts will be on fixed term contracts up to October 2021, with the potential for extension once sustainable funding is secured. We are open to secondments and welcome discussions with partner organisations.

Law 4 Dementia Care (L4DC) is a partnership project between the Life Story Network/tide and Making Space, funded by The Legal Education Foundation whose aim is to raise the awareness and knowledge of the legal rights of carers of people with dementia. Everyone’s life has been affected by the pandemic, for carers, this has been devastating.

The closure of care homes to visitors in response to the coronavirus pandemic means that many people have been unable to visit family and friends living in care homes. For many people this means they may have tried using new ways to keep in touch while they are apart.

Tide responded to the Welsh Parliament’s Health, Social Care and Sport Committee’s inquiry into Covid 19 by sharing anonymised views of carers who had taken part in the tide Covid-19 survey and the views of carer members who had contacted us directly. In particular, carers had commented on: visiting restrictions in care homes, lack of PPE, correspondence from Welsh Government and available information, paid care, shopping and loneliness.

She was interviewed along with carers Liz and Mike Brooks who were talking about the undervaluing of carers of people with dementia and just how much one carer saves the NHS and government. Law for Dementia Carers (L4DC) is a two-year project funded by a grant from the Legal Education Foundation to tide. The project is being carried out as a pilot in Greater Manchester, supporting Dementia United’s aim “to make Greater Manchester the best place in the world for dementia care. There are many gaps in care and support for carers of people with dementia including access to wider social welfare and legal support which are taking a toll on families’ health and finances. The focus of L4DC is to provide legal, including human rights, information for carers of people with dementia by developing training modules that carers can access.

Changing lives through sharing stories is just one of the founding principles behind tide, together in dementia everyday who are delighted to have been awarded charity status. Dementia is a growing health crisis, with someone developing dementia every 3 seconds. In the UK there are 850,000 people living with dementia, supported by family or friends who take on the role of carer.

Shocking new research commissioned by Alzheimer’s Society shows the total cost of dementia to the UK economy has risen by £11 billion to £34.7 billion a year. This cost is set to increase substantially to £94.1 billion with the number of people living with dementia expected to continue to rise by 2040, as stated in a report by the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre (CPEC).
